There are many factors that impact the embryo potential. Maternal Health : Modifiable “factors” that influence embryo potential, which are :
- Stress Stress affects a high percentage of infertile couples (40 – 80%). Some studies found that mind-body therapy reduced stress in the couples attended the IVF cycles, and those couples participated up to 5 IVF cycles.
- Diet Preconception dietary modification can increase the chance of pregnancy: The recommended diet includes of : fruits 2 pieces/day, Vegetable > 200 g/d, Meat > 3 portion/week, Fish >1 portion/week, Whole wheat products equivalent to 4 slices bread/day, and regular use of mono- and poly-unsaturated oils.
- Body mass index (BMI) There are consistent evidence that obesity is associated with lowered pregnancy rates and higher miscarriage rates. Some studies found that obesity may decrease the oocyte yield and live birth rates. Overweight and obesity also increase the risk of abnormal spindles and chromosome misalignment in oocytes. If BMI > 25, 3 kg-loss increases the percentage of mature oocytes.
- Lifestyle factors Cigarette smoking impairs the ovarian reserve, follicular function, embryo development and fertility in women. Exposure of smoke 1 hour twice daily for 12 weeks significantly increases in oocytes with disrupted spindles, so the risk of chromosome abnormality in the embryos is higher.
Recommendations for the “Health” of IVF patients
Counsel patients who are planning IVF that :
- Stress is often associated with infertility and that therapy may increase likelihood of success.
- Diet A healthy diet may improve the likelihood of IVF success by more than 50%.
- Obesity is associated with lower fertilization and live birth rates. Weight loss should be encouraged.
- Smoking Patients should be strongly encouraged to stop smoking before they start IVF. Other lifestyle factors, such as alcohol and caffeine taking, appear to have a limited association with likelihood of success.
